New Gas Cylinder Rules : If you use an LPG gas cylinder at home, there’s an important update you should know. The government has introduced several new rules in 2026 related to gas cylinder booking and delivery. These changes apply to all major providers like Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas. The main aim behind these updates is to make the system more transparent, digital, and free from misuse or fraud, while ensuring that benefits reach the right consumers.
Aadhaar and mobile number linking is now mandatory
One of the biggest changes is that every LPG consumer must link their Aadhaar card, mobile number, and gas connection. This step has been taken to eliminate fake connections and reduce black marketing of cylinders. If your mobile number is not yet linked to your gas connection, you should visit your nearest gas agency and complete the process as soon as possible. Without proper linking, you may face issues in booking or receiving your cylinder.
OTP-based delivery system introduced
The delivery process has also become more secure with the introduction of OTP verification. Once you book a cylinder, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. At the time of delivery, you will need to share this OTP with the delivery person. Only after verification will the cylinder be handed over to you. This ensures that the cylinder reaches the correct customer and prevents misuse. For elderly or disabled consumers, a family member’s number can also be linked for convenience.
Subsidy only for eligible families through DBT
The rules for LPG subsidy have also been updated. Now, only families that meet the government’s income criteria will receive subsidy benefits. The subsidy amount will be transferred directly to the consumer’s bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. To receive this benefit, your bank account must be linked with your Aadhaar. High-income households, income taxpayers, or those owning certain assets like four-wheelers may be excluded from the subsidy list after verification.
Multiple options available for easy booking
While rules have become stricter, the booking process has been made easier and more convenient. Consumers can now book their gas cylinders through multiple platforms such as the official mobile apps of gas companies, IVRS helpline numbers, WhatsApp services, and company websites. Once the booking is done, you receive an instant confirmation via SMS. Payment can be made using UPI, net banking, or even cash on delivery, depending on your preference.
KYC update is necessary to continue services
Another important requirement is completing your KYC (Know Your Customer). The government has clearly stated that if your KYC is not updated, your gas service may be temporarily suspended. KYC includes submitting your Aadhaar details, active mobile number, and bank account information. During this process, authorities also check if multiple gas connections exist under the same address. If duplicate connections are found, extra ones may be cancelled.

Strict action against commercial use of domestic cylinders
The government has also taken strict steps to prevent the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders. Using household cylinders for commercial purposes such as in hotels, restaurants, or small businesses is strictly prohibited. If anyone is found violating this rule, heavy penalties can be imposed and the gas connection may be cancelled immediately. For business use, a separate commercial gas connection is mandatory.
What consumers should do now
To avoid any inconvenience, consumers should take a few simple steps. Make sure your Aadhaar, mobile number, and bank account are properly linked to your gas connection. Complete your KYC process without delay and be prepared for OTP-based delivery. Also, always use your domestic cylinder strictly for household purposes. Following these guidelines will help you continue your gas services smoothly and ensure you receive any eligible subsidy benefits without interruption.
